As questions get more complex, Unblocked expands to meet them

Over the last few months, we’ve seen a clear shift in how people use Unblocked. The questions have become more ambitious.

What began as focused lookups, understanding a function, tracing a dependency, finding prior art, is now extending into questions that span systems, time, and context. Developers aren’t just asking what something does. They’re asking how it works today, how it got there, and how it connects to the rest of the organization.

This shift reflects a broader change in how teams are working. As AI becomes more integrated into development workflows, both developers and their tools are operating at a higher level of abstraction and those types of questions naturally follow.

To support this, we’ve expanded the search backend that powers Unblocked.

The system is now able to take on compound questions directly. When you ask how a system works and what has changed recently, Unblocked can break that into its underlying components, gather the relevant signals across code, issues, and conversations, and reconcile them into a single, coherent answer. What previously might have been explored through a sequence of queries can now be handled in one.

This expansion also deepens how Unblocked works with structured data. Queries like “show me all open issues in this project” are resolved against the underlying systems themselves, with filters like owner, status, and time range applied directly. The result is a complete and accurate view, aligned with how teams actually track and manage work.

Time is now treated as a first-class dimension as well. Questions about what changed last week, or who has been discussing a topic recently, can be answered in a way that reflects activity across sources over that period, rather than as a collection of disconnected references.

Taken together, these changes extend the range of questions Unblocked can handle, without changing how you interact with it. You can continue to ask simple, focused questions, but you can also ask broader, more exploratory ones and expect a single, coherent answer in return.

These improvements are now live for all customers. There’s nothing to configure. If your questions have been getting more complex, Unblocked is there to answer them.
